Oh my God can we stop. Let’s stop with this.
First of all, yes, Asami has had a spectacularly shitty few weeks. She lost her dad in a way, her house, her way of life, her entire universe has shifted on its axis. That sucks.
But guess what? Just because bad things happen to you doesn’t mean that you are the center of the universe, or that you are the center of other people’s worlds either. It’s not always all about you. And this episode? Was not about Asami.
That’s what people are saying about ep 9 - that he should have been more considerate of Asami’s feelings. That he shouldn’t have been so worried about Korra when Asami was there. That he should have been thinking of Asami. Asami, Asami, Asami.
No. Korra, in case people have forgotten, was just kidnapped, by what they first believed was a radical who would just love energybending her, torturing her, killing her, and then they found out she was in the hands of a bloodbender who could crush all her internal organs with a flick of his wrist! Oh yeah, nothing to be concerned about here.
Of course, Asami needs to come first in his life on a daily basis as she is his girlfriend (which she has; bar the kiss Korra planted on him 4 episodes ago, Mako has made clear that he is with Asami, supports her and is there for her - he stayed with her despite the fact that her dad tried to maim/kill him).
But this is not a normal daily basis. Mako was thinking about one person and one person only in this time of crisis: Korra. And that just makes sense. When your friend gets seriously injured, are you super concerned about how your girlfriend/boyfriend is going to feel that you weren’t there to hang out with them at the mall cause you were at the hospital trying to help? Yeah, probably not. Priorities, people: and this time, Asami’s feelings were simply not a priority. The fact that Korra was in mortal danger was.
Is that kinda cold towards Asami? Yes. Is it fair? It’s not a question of fair at this moment. Mako has a lot to answer for, and he needs a serious, long talk with Asami ASAP. But about his feelings towards Korra, not his actions in this episode. He was scared out of his mind and concerned and relieved for someone he cares about, and the fact that he has a girlfriend doesn’t mean that he should have cared less or acted more nonchalant. I understand Asami’s hurt and jealousy, but the fact that Korra came pretty close to dying takes precedence, imo. (and 2 b fair he didn’t like kiss her when he got her back, cuz that would have been a problem tho)
You can’t expect people to handle you and your feels with kid gloves, especially in times of crisis. When things get stressful and ugly, people you love will hurt you unintentionally, and you will hurt the people you love. Doesn’t make us bad people. Just, you know, people.
